A Period of Adjustments

I love Dirk Bogarde's works and this being his first fiction that I have read.

The story is the usual - a divorcee coming to terms with his brother's death, his playing the dad figure to his son, his infatuation, and his love interest and all set out in French Summer. But how Dirk Bogarde manages to throw life in the cliche tale is an art that he has pioneered.

The sons character, 9 year old boy, really stands out and one stands to live with the boy coming to terms with his parents divorce and child abuse and French.

Although I felt he overdid with the erotic encounters and I simply skimmed through those sections and the ending sans those its a winner.

Liked it.
