Another boring TT...word and meanings :)...back to school time :) BTW I liked the 13th one :)

1. adumbrate - To give a sketchy outline of; to disclose partially or guardedly.
   Synonyms: outline, sketch, intimate, insinuate
   Usage: Before beginning his dissertation, he adumbrated his ideas to his professor.
2. lugubrious - Mournful, dismal, or gloomy, especially to an exaggerated or ludicrous degree.
   Synonyms: bathetic, mawkish
   Usage: The look on his face was so lugubrious that for a moment I thought I had actually hurt his feelings.
3. bellicose - Warlike in manner or temperament; pugnacious.
   Synonyms: battleful, combative, contentious
   Usage: She had always found him to be bellicose and was not surprised when he was expelled from the military academy for his belligerent and violent behavior.
4. pendent - Hanging down; projecting.
   Synonyms: dangling, overhanging, suspended
   Usage: An examination of the cave revealed nothing but hundreds of sleeping bats pendent from the ceiling.
5. divertimento - A chiefly 18th-century form of instrumental chamber music having several short movements.
   Synonyms: serenade
   Usage: After a sumptuous dinner, the guests were led into the music room where they were treated to a delightful divertimento.
6. portmanteau - A large leather suitcase that opens into two hinged compartments.
   Synonyms: Gladstone, suitcase, traveling bag
   Usage: Before setting out on his voyage, he made sure that his portmanteau was packed with everything he would need.
7. sybarite - A person devoted to pleasure and luxury; a voluptuary.
   Synonyms: voluptuary
   Usage: This official sybarite dressed, dined, and visited a dozen or fifteen salons between eight at night and three in the morning.
8. macerate - To make soft, usually by steeping in liquid, and cause to disintegrate as a result.
   Synonyms: soften
   Usage: The stale bread was left to macerate in a bowl of milk for a few hours.
9. abnegate - Deny oneself (something); restrain, especially from indulging in some pleasure.
   Synonyms: deny
   Usage: The minister abnegated the luxuries of life.
10. discomfit - To make uneasy or perplexed; disconcert.
    Synonyms: discompose, untune, upset, disconcert
    Usage: Her extreme candor would often discomfit strangers who suddenly found themselves privy to her most private thoughts.
11. quandary - A state of uncertainty or perplexity.
    Synonyms: dilemma, plight, predicament
    Usage: The situation was awkward, but nothing like the quandary they had found themselves in when their car had broken down on a deserted road.
12. anonym - A pseudonym.
    Synonyms: nom de guerre, pseudonym
    Usage: Aware that all kinds of people would be reading the bulletin board, he used an anonym when posting messages on it.
13. cerumen - A soft yellow wax secreted by glands in the ear canal.
    Synonyms: earwax
    Usage: A buildup of cerumen was irritating Billy's ear, so his mother gently cleaned the area with a cotton swab.
